The Vision Statement is one of the foundations of a good strategic plan. In language
that describes "what will be different because we were here?" it clarifies the company's shared
dreams and aspirations, allowing everyone to begin the planning process from the same frame of
reference.
Objectives are the highest-level overview of the company's purpose, the shortest answer to
the question "what will be do?". The list should be short and directly related to achieving the
Vision we have agreed upon.
STRATEGIC PLANNING
Goals are specific, measurable statements of what we plan to achieve, directly related to the
objectives we have set out.
Finally, Strategies lay out the actual steps to be taken to assure that goals are reached.
All of these elements are then combined into a report, A Strategic Plan which helps to
guide operations for several years. For an example of this complete report, I have been given
permission to direct you to the Strategic Plan created for the Chattanooga Theatre Centre in
Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Among the most important activities for any organization or institution is the act of planning, though it is not often
given the attention it deserves. Strategic planning, creating the roadmap for as much as a decade of progress, is an
excellent opportunity to gather consensus, enhance communication and connect with the community. A well
structured plan will provide direction for ongoing operations while ensuring that we are always heading in the right
direction. Some aspects of a Sansom/Brown facilitated plan include:
STAFF/BOARD DEVELOPMENT
The proper relationship between Staffs and Boards - one in which everyone knows what is expected and has the
tools to succeed - is vital to company well being. We can help you decide the right structure for you, and help put
that structure in place.
The Job Description is among the most important documents for defining the roles
that Staff, Board and Volunteers will play in your non-profit organization, ensuring that
everyone knows what is expected of whom. We recommend a clear, concise job description for
every member of your team.
Just as in all other areas, the only way to succeed in finding the funds your programs need is by planning carefully
and implementing completely. Let us help you identify attainable fund-raising goals and potential resources to help
you reach them.
The Campaign Plan lays out a specific, attainable goal and breaks it down into an
understandable set of sub goals, each with its own strategy for success. A time-line is essential,
and a list of required resources and potential ways of meeting those requirements round out the
plan.
FUND RAISING RESEARCH AND PLANNING
Whether you're a well-established non-profit or a brand new group with a great idea, your foundation documents
literally pave the way for all your future success. Well written, clear and concise documents, without unnecessary
'legalese' that can actually reduce their usefulness, will serve you well for many years. This is an example of a
"Charter" for a non-incororated business coalition, which would be similar to a set of non-profit Bylaws.
